Are You Too Smart ?

Smart at workWe complete our education start a job and then tend to stay in that job for too long. This is the tendency of most human beings as we are basically creatures of habit.

However, if it has reached a point where your job does not hold any challenge or give you the opportunity to learn and grow then you should step back and seriously review the situation. Staying in a job that requires nothing from you intellectually or creatively is the biggest disservice you may be doing to yourself.

Some signs which you may watch for are :

BOREDOM :

The most obvious sign is boredom. If it has reached a stage where you are constantly bored and tend to lose your concentration when working, its definitely time to think. While every job may have its routine and sometimes boring moments, if you constantly need coffee/tea to get through the day, something is wrong.

SHARING OR SELLING YOUR IDEAS :

If your ideas are not understood or used and implemented then its time to move on to a place where your talents are valued and are not going to waste. Ultimately this will result in your IQ dropping as there will be no stimulus to keep you on the move.

NO MENTOR OR ROLE MODEL AROUND

If there is no one around who stimulates you mentally, who you can look up to and learn from, then it’s maybe time to start thinking about what you really want in the future. Your boss should be someone you can learn from and who should know how to grow the talent in the department, if that’s not the case there’s not much they can offer you in the future.

Finally ………………….

THE WAY FORWARD :

Its troublesome to change jobs and many doubts may come to mind whether taking a new job will really solve the problem and not end in moving out of the frying pan into the fire.

However, if you have confidence in yourself and your talents you should always have your eyes set on what is down the road. If you want to grow and develop and learn more – you need to make something happen, you need to look elsewhere.

  1. I can totally relate to this. I worked for a boss that changed anything I implemented. I eventually left because I felt under-appreciated.
